# How to calculate days passed from start date by group?

I need to go from this

i.e. creating a variable that holds the number of days passed since the first date, grouped by id.

Using data.table: (I assume the date column is character here. If its date format, then you can remove the as.Date(.) function call.

So when I try your solution, i got an error saying Combining := in j with by is not yet implemented. Please let maintainer('data.table') know if you are interested in this.. Is it because my version of R is too old (2.14.2) or my version of package data.table (1.8.0)? – plannapus Jan 21 at 11:07
Update data.table. The recent stable version is 1.8.6 I believe. Proably that's the issue. – Arun Jan 21 at 11:52

You can also use a combination of functions difftime and split:

is there a difference between diff operated on date object and difftime? I mean, will diff break at anytime? Because, diff gives me the result directly in days. – Arun Jan 21 at 10:35
I used difftime here because I didn't want a lagged difference but the difference between each element and the first one. Otherwise diff is indeed very suitable for dates (as far as I can see anyway). – plannapus Jan 21 at 10:38

Two other approaches: ave and using the plyr library:
